Cisco unveils Quantum Network Controller and updated quantum compiler as research prototypes
Cisco introduces two research prototypes: a Quantum Network Controller that lets applications request entanglement as a service, and an updated Network-Aware Quantum Compiler that is the controller's first native application.
Cisco introduces two research prototypes: the Quantum Network Controller, which it calls the control plane for quantum networks, and an updated release of its Network-Aware Quantum Compiler, the Controller's first native application. Cisco announced them in a blog post dated 6 October 2026.
With the Controller, an application requests entanglement by naming the endpoints, rate, fidelity and timing it needs, without knowing how the network produces it. Cisco calls this model Entanglement-as-a-Service (EaaS). The Controller exposes an interface for each device category (sources, switches, detectors and timing systems), with a hardware abstraction layer (HAL) underneath so any vendor's hardware in a category plugs in the same way. Cisco also lists stateful network awareness and automatic retries of supported operations among its features. Because a quantum state can't be read without destroying it, the Controller can't inspect traffic and verifies link quality statistically.
The Compiler decides how a quantum program splits across processors and turns that decision into a network request. It gets no special access: a general-purpose interface treats every application the same. Cisco says security and coordination applications called Quantum Alert and Quantum Sync are designed to request entanglement the same way today, with sensing to follow.
The Controller builds on the Universal Quantum Switch, a research prototype Cisco introduced earlier this year. Cisco says connecting 1,000 quantum nodes point to point takes close to 500,000 dedicated links, and the switch is designed to put every node on one shared fabric instead. Cisco says a deployment achieved greater than 99% polarization fidelity at room temperature, and that it showed Cisco software coordinating hardware from multiple vendors on live fiber.
Cisco's pitch is that quantum networks need software to schedule entanglement once they grow beyond a handful of nodes. Both items are research prototypes, and the post gives no availability dates. Cisco is holding its Quantum Research Summit this week and a virtual Shift.Forward() conference on 27 October 2026.
